PHONODECK

Edit by hand any time. Your changes win over anything the story said before, from your next message on. The AI refreshes it every 10 turns and keeps your Player's Wishes (including the feeling to achieve and your goal).
GOOGLE GEMINI

You are playing on an invite, so you need nothing here. If you love it and want to keep playing on your own Google billing, you can paste your own Gemini API key below (advanced); it then replaces the invite.

Stored only in this browser (localStorage) and sent only to Google. Use a key with a low spending cap, and do not enter it on a shared computer. Get a key at aistudio.google.com/apikey.

Trade cost against continuity.

COST ESTIMATE

The bar above the message box shows tokens and an estimated cost per turn and per adventure, including input Google served from its cache at a discount. It is only as accurate as these prices, so check them against your Google billing page.

NARRATION

Tap Hands-free (next to Send) once and the microphone stays on: say "make it so" to send. Tap a Game Master message to hear it again. Speech recognition uses your browser's built-in service (Chrome and Edge send the audio to Google or Microsoft servers to transcribe it), so avoid it for anything sensitive.

DICTATION
GEMINI NARRATOR VOICE
BROWSER VOICE (FALLBACK)

Used when the Gemini voice is off, unavailable or out of quota. On iPhone and iPad the app lets Safari use its own default voice: web pages can only use Apple's basic built-in voices there (downloaded Enhanced or Premium voices are not available to Safari), so it sounds robotic. On a computer, Automatic picks the best voice (marked ★), such as Microsoft Ana Online (Natural) on Edge.

Hear nothing on iPhone or iPad? Silent Mode mutes the device voice and the background sounds (the Gemini voice still plays). To turn it off, swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to open Control Center and tap the bell so it is no longer crossed out. Older iPads and iPhones may have a switch on the side instead; newer iPhones can also use the Action button.

BACKGROUND SOUND

Test voice tries the Gemini voice and, if it is out of quota, the device voice (Siri-style system voice). Each step is reported here.

ABOUT YOU

Filled in for you when you set up a new experience, so you only type them once. You can still change them for any one story. Stored only in this browser.

SAVE TO A FOLDER ON THIS COMPUTER (Chrome / Edge)

Pick a folder once. Each adventure is written to its own file (<name>.json) after every turn. The API key is never written to these files.

No folder linked.

PHONODECK

The precursor to the holodeck. Your story, your vibe. Everything is remembered.

WELCOME TO THE PHONODECK

The Phonodeck is an interactive text-to-speech story maker. The goal is to make the stories feel as real as possible: exactly like a narrator is reading you a good book that you can control.

Setup should take a minute.

BEFORE YOU START

  1. Use Chrome, Edge or Safari. Firefox can't turn speech into text, so hands-free talking won't work there.
  2. Turn your sound on. A narrator reads the story aloud, so turn the volume up. On an iPhone or iPad, also make sure Silent Mode is off (in Control Center, the bell should not be crossed out).
  3. Try hands-free. Tap 🎧 Hands-free next to Send, then just talk. When you have finished, say "make it so" and the phonodeck answers.
  4. Test the microphone. Allow it when your browser asks, then say a few words. If the words appear here, hands-free works.

YOUR GEMINI KEY

  1. Get a Gemini API key at aistudio.google.com/apikey and set up billing for it (a small prepaid balance works).
  2. Paste it below.
  3. Press Start.

Your key is stored only in this browser and sent only to Google. Use a key with a low spending cap, and do not enter it on a shared computer.

THIS KEY HAS NO BILLING

Google refused the story model for this key, which means it is a free-tier key. Free keys cannot use the Pro model, so the story would be told by a much smaller model.

The experience will be much worse. The phonodeck depends on the Pro model to keep characters, memory and the story's hooks together. On a free key it falls flat, and the free daily limits run out quickly.

TO FIX IT

  1. Set up billing for your key's Google project (a small prepaid balance works): aistudio.google.com/apikey, then Set up billing next to your key.
  2. Or ask the person who shared the phonodeck with you for an invite link, which needs no key.
